What is "Truth Data"?

In the context of AlphaMap’s data accuracy, “truth data” refers to highly reliable, ground-truth measurements used as benchmarks to validate and improve our algorithms. Here’s how it works for both foot traffic and car traffic data:

Foot Traffic Truth Data

For foot traffic, truth data comes from in-store sensors that physically count the number of people entering a particular store. These sensors provide precise and direct measurements, making them an essential reference point. We’ve tested AlphaMap’s foot traffic data across thousands of locations against this truth data and consistently found that our composite values are the most accurate among all providers.

Car Traffic Truth Data

When it comes to car traffic, truth data is sourced from strip counters provided by Departments of Transportation (DOT). These counters measure vehicle traffic at specific points, often near traffic signals. However, DOT data tends to be older and limited to certain locations. While it doesn’t cover every road segment, it serves as a valuable input to train our algorithms, helping us deliver broader and more up-to-date insights beyond the DOT’s specific data points.

How Truth Data Shapes Our Algorithms

Both types of truth data—foot traffic and car traffic—are integral to the ongoing improvement of our platform. By incorporating these verified measurements, we ensure that AlphaMap delivers the most accurate and actionable insights possible for your decision-making needs.
